Today is National Senior Citizens Day — a good occasion to celebrate the older adults we’re honored to care for, and to share a few practical ways to help them stay safe and steady at home.
Why Falls Are Worth Taking Seriously
Falls are one of the most common — and most preventable — risks for older adults living independently. The good news is that most fall risks can be reduced with simple, low-cost changes around the home.
A Basic Home Safety Check-In
- Secure or remove loose rugs and runners, especially at the top of stairs.
- Add grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower or tub.
- Keep walkways clear of cords, boxes, and furniture that narrows the path.
- Install nightlights along the route from the bedroom to the bathroom.
- Make sure stair handrails are sturdy on both sides, not just one.
If you’re not sure where to start, our nurses and therapists can walk through a full home safety assessment as part of a care plan — flagging hazards a family might not notice simply because they’ve become part of the background.
Medications Play a Role Too
Certain medications, or combinations of them, can cause dizziness or drowsiness that raises fall risk. A weekly pill organizer, a written schedule posted somewhere visible, and using a single pharmacy for all prescriptions all help. Our nursing team can review a patient’s full medication list and flag anything worth a second look.
Celebrating the People at the Center of This Work
Growing older is a natural part of life — and with the right support, it can be met with dignity, comfort, and independence at home rather than decline. Today, we’re grateful for the wisdom and resilience of the seniors we serve, and for the chance to help them stay in the homes they love.
