If you’re researching home health care for a parent, spouse, or yourself, you’ve probably run into a lot of clinical language and not a lot of clarity. Where does care actually start? Who decides if it’s needed? And once it begins, who shows up at the door? Here’s the plain-language version, from the team at Kinesis Home Health Care.
It Starts With a Belief, Not Just a Service
Before we get into eligibility and paperwork, it’s worth saying why we do this work. We believe aging and illness are natural parts of life not failures to manage alone. Our job is to help patients and families cope with those challenges so people can stay in the place they know best: home. That belief shapes every visit, from the first phone call to the last day of a care plan.
Step One: Your Doctor Makes the Call
Home health care isn’t something you sign up for directly it starts with a physician. Your doctor, or a hospital discharge team, evaluates your condition and determines whether home health services are appropriate. If they are, the physician issues a formal medical order, and that order is what allows an agency like Kinesis to begin care. This matters because it means your home health team works hand-in-hand with your existing doctor, not around them.
Step Two: Understanding “Homebound Status”
A key piece of eligibility is something called homebound status. In plain terms, a patient generally qualifies if any of the following is true:
- Leaving home is genuinely difficult without help — a cane, walker, wheelchair, or assistance from another person.
- A doctor has recommended staying home to avoid a serious health setback or exposure to infection.
- Leaving home at all requires major physical effort or simply isn’t possible.
If any of that sounds like your situation, it’s worth raising with your physician. That conversation is the real first step — everything else follows from there.
Step Three: Meeting Your Care Team
Once care is ordered, Kinesis builds a plan around the specific services you need Skilled Nursing, Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy, Medical Social Work, Home Health Aides, and In-Home Laboratory Services. Not every patient needs every service; your plan is built around what you actually need and reviewed as your condition changes. We’ll cover each of these in depth over the next few posts.
Step Four: Paying for Care
Insurance is often the biggest source of confusion, so here’s the short version: Kinesis works with Medicare, Tricare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Humana, Aetna, Anthem, WellCare, and most commercial insurance plans. Our intake team can help you understand what’s covered before care ever begins, so there are no surprises.
