UV Safety Awareness Month:

Protecting Homebound Patients' Skin This Texas Summer

July is UV Safety Awareness Month, and in Central Texas, where the summer sun is intense for months at a time, that awareness matters most for the patients who can least afford a setback: those healing from wounds, surgeries, or managing chronic skin conditions at home.

Sun exposure does more than raise the risk of sunburn or skin cancer over time — for homebound patients, it can complicate healing. Certain antibiotics, diuretics, and other common medications increase photosensitivity, making skin more prone to burns or rashes even with brief exposure. Healing wounds and recent surgical sites are also more vulnerable to UV damage and infection if not properly protected and covered.

Our skilled nursing team incorporates skin and wound assessment into every relevant home visit, watching for signs of irritation, delayed healing, or infection that can be aggravated by heat and sun exposure. We also provide direct education to patients and family caregivers on proper dressing changes, infection prevention, and simple precautions that make a real difference.

  • Keep healing wounds fully covered and out of direct sunlight, even near a window.
  • Choose loose, breathable, light-colored clothing that covers arms and legs when patients spend time outdoors.
  • Ask your nurse or pharmacist whether current medications increase sun sensitivity.
  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to any exposed, healed skin — and reapply every two hours outdoors.
  • Schedule outdoor time, including porch sitting or short walks, before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m.

If you’re managing wound care, post-surgical recovery, or a chronic skin condition for a loved one in Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, Cedar Park, Kyle, or New Braunfels, our skilled nursing team can help keep healing on track all summer long. Call (512) 551-9159 to schedule an assessment.
